I wrote the following in response to a member sending me The Response: a call to prayer for a nation in crisis by Governor Rick Perry. He said it should publish it, so I am. You can read about the Reponse here: http://theresponseusa.com/
You do realize Perry, who probably is a Christian is also a Saul. Saul was not afraid to usurp the powers and privileges of the ministry and wanted those trappings to make himself look good.
Second, we’re way out front on this one. For almost 12 years we’ve been praying for our country and leaders every Sunday.
Third, note the feel, the look, the smell of the emergent church, i.e. para-church, is all over this.
Fourth, this quote, “There is hope for America. It lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees,” can be turned around. There is hope for America. It is found in Heaven being on His knees in Gethsemane and still interceding for us before the throne (Hebrews 7:25).
No, you’re confused. The solution lies in Heaven, and so they need to _go there_. They’re gathering in Houston to pray for MORE natural disasters in order to achieve this. It’s all very logical.
Is prayer a race? If I start praying for our country and leaders every day, I think I will be caught up to you in two years…
My saying “we’re out in front on this one” is in the spirit of Barbara Mandrell singing that she was country when country wasn’t cool. Even if prayer were a race, I’d still have you beat soundly. I’ve been praying the Lord’s Prayer daily for over 30 years in which, as our Catechism teaches, I pray for “good government” when I ask for daily bread.
Is this not some of the same nonsense promoted by Guiliani after 9/11? Lets all just get together and pray for America. Pray to whom? Pray with whom? Makes for great politics but terrible theology!
